I’m not really into Fantasy, but the Broken Earth Trilogy by NK Jemisin was recommended to me by so many people that I had to read it.
I loved it, so, so much!
I thought, as I loved those books, I should give The City We Became a go.
In reality, I’ve been a bit disappointed by it so far. I’m 150 pages or so in, and I’m really struggling to read it. The writing style is different, the prose is excessive. I desperately want to get through it but I’m finding it so tricky.
Anyone read this?

It was definitely confusing at first as you wrap your head around the different worlds it inhabits, but once I got my bearings I found it felt like a young adult novel with its heavy handed characterizations and dialogue.
I had the same experience. Jemisin is SO good and Broken Earth is probably my favorite contemporary fantasy. Everything about City seemed made to appeal to me. Then I read it and the execution was so disappointing.
Maybe it does read like YA? I’m not sure. But whatever she was going for it doesn’t work for me.
I loved The Broken Earth trilogy but found The City We Became pretty silly. I was cracking jokes about it being basically Hetalia with boroughs instead of countries.
