I had no intention of reading this book. I just saw it in the bookshop, recognised it as the source for the new Yorgos Lanthimos movie and decided to dip into the first chapter. I was immediately pulled into it and it was with difficulty I extracted myself to go do my shopping. Hours later and I was still thinking about it so I bought it. I read it in two sittings. I just found it compulsively readable. I feel this is a book I will re-read and I still want to see the film.

I don’t know who to recommend this to. Some people are just going to be wtf did you tell me to read, others will love it. I think it helps if you enjoy a weird Glaswegian sense of humour, dark and satirical but also mischievous. If you are interested I think you should just do what I did, have a dip into that first chapter and if you find yourself like Alice tumbling down that rabbit hole, brace yourself for a weird but ultimately interesting, sometimes repulsive, sometimes hilarious ride. Also gets some major plus points for being illustrated. We should have more illustrated books for adults.
