In 2024, I had two resolutions for myself:

    1. Finish all the series I’ve already started before starting a new one.
    2. Not to buy new books.

Today, 22 days into the new year, I failed the first resolution and to celebrate, I promptly decided to break the second one as well. So please join me at laughing at myself by sharing your reading related failures of self-control if you feel like it.

I have never made New Year’s resolutions for anything. I do like to set goals and create or join challenges, but I would never have one that required a streak or consistency. I stopped starting goals at the beginning of the year. I tend to set them throughout the year and review them monthly with a more in-depth review each quarter.

Looking at your goals, I’ve set similar goals, but yours are too extreme and restrictive for me. Last year one of my goals was to finish the 3 series I’ve been reading off and on over the past few years, but I didn’t restrict myself from starting another series.

I do buy nothing months, but it is unrealistic to think I could go a whole year.

    2. My only perennial reading resolution is to finish in the current year all books acquired the previous year. I don’t read them in first-in-first-out fashion or desist from buying new books, but I try to stick to it so that nothing in my to-read pile gets too stale. I haven’t missed this goal for 5 years now, but it’s a pretty easy one to stick to.

I’ve been doing well with my resolution not to buy books. I’ve been able to get a lot of ebooks through Libby and my free trial of Kindle Unlimited. But I might buy a book when I go on vacation as souvenir, we’ll see.
