So, I finished reading the Count of Monte Cristo. (Clever post title, right?) Not only was it one of the best books I have ever read, but it is just another on the list that my friends will most likely not read because of it’s length and depth and height and and and…

First of all: Fantastic. The move with Jim Caviezel is the only other adaption I have looked at because my friend begged me when I finished the book. Horrible in comparison. I was gracious with it mostly because I have no idea how you could fit such a story on screen in less than a mini-series. Or maybe at least a medium-series. I do not think I will find a book of its style and caliber. Maybe someone can enlighten me??

Secondly: Does anyone know a good abridged version that I could recommend to those I know who are curious but intimidated? A lot of the reviews are conflicting on different versions.

Last of all: I have a growing feeling of mourning at the thought of not finding something better or even equal to it. The messages intertwined in such beautiful story. Somehow the Counts character was beloved, innocent, and deeply known at the beginning and then transformed into a mysterious genius who you could only guess at his ideas later on. The last couple hundred pages I couldn’t put down. The ending many complain about from what I can tell, but for me it was the cherry on top that sealed the story so well.

    Well done Dumas. Well done.
