I thought I would make a different kind of post today about the actual, physical books themselves. I am currently reading Mountain of Silence by Kyriacos Markides and while it is about 6x9x1″, I can easily hold it up to read with one hand. When I set it down in my lap, it just stays gently open. I don’t have to mess with the spine to get the pages to open fully. I simply turn the page and I’m good!

This comes as quite a surprise for an affordable paperback book. I wouldn’t have assumed the spine would stay in such pristine form as I read it. I wouldn’t have assumed this book would feel good to read on a physical level based on its appearance. The info page says it’s an “Image” book published by Doubleday.

I am very distracted by physical books usually and so I am generally an ebook reader whenever possible. I don’t like the encumbrance of fighting with an object ergonomically just to read, so this is quite the treat for me!

Another quality I like in books is the texture of the cover. I noticed a lot of modern books have a slightly rubberized texture which gives them a matte finish and I actually really like to touch that. The current book I have is slightly textured on the cover but not rubberized. The worst book covers are the glossy ones that start to peel, IMO!

I am just wondering what you all like to have as physical qualities in the books you read! Surely the written content is what matters most, but what do you love to find in a physical book you pick up? Please share as I am curious!
