My daughter struggled with reading for a long time but she’s come a long way in the last year and really enjoys reading now. I’d like to find some age appropriate chapter books that she would like to encourage her enthusiasm for reading. She’s in 2nd grade and does very well in her reading classes. She’s probably reading at a 3rd grade level.

She just recently got into the Gemstone Dragons series but there’s only 4 books so it won’t be long before she’s finished with those. I’d love to find some similar series for her, or even standalone books. She loves all things girly and magical, especially mythical creatures like unicorns, dragons, fairies, etc. She’s terrified of gnomes though. Light references to gnomes are okay but she wouldn’t want to read anything that centers on gnomes. She also loves animals and wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up.

I’m not very familiar with modern kids books. What can you guys suggest for me?

    1. Eve though the baby sitters club is an older series, they had a new reboot on Netflix and changed some things to modernize it, so she might like the series.

    2. Hank the Cowdog by John Erickson.  They’re fun and silky and about dogs and there are a lot of them.

    3. Some good series for chapter book fantasy:
Zoey and Sassafrass (magical creature vet so right up her alley!)

Dragons in a Bag series by Zetta Elliot (only two of them, and with more real world themes, but I love them)

Dragon girls series (haven’t read it but looks good!)

Polly Diamond and the magic book

Ivy and Bean (more friendship focused, not fantasy)

There’s some very long unicorn and fairy series!

I think Terry Pratchett’s Tiffany Aching series, Diana Wynn Jobes, and Tamora Pierce’s immortals might be too old but they’re great to keep in mind for later. Also, if you have a library nearby, a librarian could help you find lots of these books!

Take her to your local library and ask the librarian to help. I am sure that they will know lots of different books that you can check out. Also they will have more information about newer books.
