jeez oh man where do I start. this book has been sitting on my shelf staring at me for years and I’m so glad I finally picked it up. I absolutely loved it! I think Kingsolver did a wonderful job of giving each character a really distinct voice and perspective and the character development was fantastic – as unbearable as Rachel was, I loved the static development of her character and the message behind it.

There are so many layers and themes, it’s so complex and at times heavy, but well balanced. I could write pages exploring the themes of religion and familial/gender expectations and relationships.
Kingsolver did a lot of research for this book and I think it definitely shows and adds even more depth.

I loved learning about the culture and history of the Congo. The wordplay with the language was fun. and I liked that the native people were painted in a way that didn’t make you say oh those poor people, but more of a look how resilient, resourceful and strong these people are.

I think my only complaint would be that the last few chapters were kind of unnecessary. I felt a good place to end the story would have been with the sisters together talking about Nathan’s death plus the final chapter from Ruth May’s spirit.

tell me what you liked or disliked about this book, I would love to discuss!

and remember – Tata Jesus is Bangala!
