Hi! So, I’m trying to get a gift for my girlfriend. She recently read Mistborn, and deeply connected to Vin, whom she saw in herself. I was hoping to find a book with a similar character: a teenage girl protagonist who grew up in an abusive environment, and slowly learns to open up and “discover living beyond survival,” as my girlfriend put it.
Preferably YA or a similar style. She’s also enjoyed the Hunger Games and Percy Jackson recently.

The protagonist isn’t the woman but she may like Shades of Magic by V.E. Schwab.
The protagonist isn’t a woman but Cradle by Will Wight. The main character is ostracized by his society because of his initial lack of abilities and gets out to improve himself and learn to survive in harsher environments.
