I love Sci-fi, but need to dive into the genre more I think the most classic Sci-fi I’ve read is dune. I would prefer to keep my Sci-fi separate from fantasy. I know those lines cross a ton
**A Deepness in the Sky** and **A Fire Upon the Deep** Vernor Vinge
**Ringworld** Larry Niven
**Rendezvous With Rama** Arthur C. Clarke
The Foundation series Issac Asimov

For literary SciFi from last year I would say How High We Go In the Dark and this year In Ascension. As for author, Emily St. John Mandel’s companion books Station 11, Glass Hotel and Sea of Tranquility.

Reading Neal Asher at the moment.
Short, punchy, action oriented chapters set in the far future and mainly in space. Multiple viewpoints. He throws a lot into each book, with an action focus and fast moving plots, but well described and highly enjoyable if you’re looking for something well paced. (And the AIs often have more character than some of the people.)
I started on his recent Rise of The Jain, with “Soldier”, and I’m now on “The Warship” the next one. This is late in the series. ( There are earlier books and series that might be better entry points. )
I didn’t see it suggested (but could be further down) so going to add “Starship Troopers”, nothing like the film, great book in it’s own right by Robert A Heinlein.

I will go one step further and suggest an author: Ted Chiang. The movie arrival was based on one of his books. My creative writing teacher used to say that he was known as a “writer’s writer”, or somebody whose books authors like to read. I feel his body of work might fit very well what you are looking for.

Not books, but authors. William Gibson for cyberpunk, David Weber for military scifi, and John Ringo. Second for guys like Asimov Niven, Pournelle, Norton, Herbert, and more than I can mention. SciFi was built on the backs of these guys.
