I recently started this book after seeing it was on Oprah’s list and revolved around a storyline from a cultural background that I belong to. To top it off, I’ve been seeing rave reviews about this book. I took all this as a sign that I should absolutely read it. I certainly haven’t made a huge dent in reading it yet, currently on page 66 out of like 700, but I’m having a hard time maintaining interest and I’m struggling a bit with the author’s writing style and inclusion of what feel like excessive detail at times. Is there a point in this novel where the pace picks up or some kind of more significant conflict occurs? I’m trying to read it out of discipline and commitment, but I really want to love this book in the same way that so many people seem to! I’m sure there’s a reason this novel has received so much praise!

I finished this before Christmas but it took much will power to muster through. It wasn’t terrible. I just couldn’t get into the story as much as I’d hoped to based on the high praises for it.
