I gotta rant yall. I read 4 of her books because a friend bought them for me. She’s really good at writing dialogue and characters, but not books with coherent plots.
Tex and Rumble Fish are a collection of short stories and noting more. The beginning and middle are DRAGGEEEDDD and the endings (which are usually the most interesting parts) are sped up because I guess she got bored? Tex is definitely the worst of the bunch. It was boring and dramatic and way too long for what it was. You’re telling me a 14 year old got sh0t and he doesn’t mind it for like 20 minutes? Like you don’t feel it at all? Man took a phone call w his girl instead of calling for help? The side characters are boring and forgettable. I don’t even remember any of their names. Dude w the baby, the girl, the dude with the motorcycle. That’s all I got. The beginning scene was the biggest book red flag in fiction ever. This grown 14 year old is crying on the ground and wrecking his house because his brother sold his horse because they were living in poverty? That’s how you know the protagonist is bout to be really likable. His brother was the only likable character everyone else can go to hell. Tex you ruined my life.
Rumble Fish was nothing. Characters were likable and the dudes relationship w his brother and dad was interesting. Dialogue was actually really good and lowkey funny. Nothing else though. It blends in with every other book she’s ever written. Most of the plot was filler. Dude get’s in a fight, dude drinks, dude breaks up with his girlfriend, dude plays pool. It would be better if it was like 30-50 pages. It could’ve been really good.
The Outsiders is great, but ultra fast paced. There’s no way that dude went through all that in a couple days. Also if I was Cherry I would never talk to any of them ever again. Those are my notes.
That Was Then, This is Now was good. I enjoyed the main characters AND the plot. It was funny and weird and kept my attention throughout the entire book. Also turned into a weird anti-drug PSA at the end. Also lowkey racist. Ending was good.
Anyway I wouldn’t read any of that again and I don’t know why people sob over them they were all pretty mid. Try to change my opinion or agree with me I don’t care
