I didn’t really make resolutions this year, but I would really like to get serious about writing (as a hobby) this year. The most common piece of advice I’ve seen about becoming a better writer is to read a lot, and I don’t really find myself reading that much. I’m a uni student and I read for class, and outside of that I mostly read nonfiction. I’d like to focus on writing fantasy, from what I know about genres I’m thinking high fantasy with magic and stuff like that. I’ve never really read or watched the more well known fantasy works like Lord of the Rings, so my fantasy frame of reference currently comes from interactive media like D&D and The Elder Scrolls series.

I’d really like to read newer, maybe more unknown/underappreciated fantasy works, especially works from diverse authors. I’ve made mistakes trying to write stories that involve racism, discrimination, and prejudice for D&D campaigns in the past, and I would like to read good examples of fantasy stories that cover these topics. Other than that, I like stories that involve all the typical fantasy stuff like magic and mythical creatures and stuff.

    1. If you enjoy stories with strong female leads, ‘Sabriel’ by Garth Nix is a book I often suggest. It’s a dark and captivating tale of a young necromancer’s quest to find her father and stop the Dead from overrunning her world, all while learning about her own powers.
