A simple premise where everyone over 23 wakes up to find a box on their doorstep. They open it to find an indestructible string with a determined length based on how much life they have left to live. What do you do if you knew how time you have life? What if you and your partner have different lengths? Would you discriminate against potential workers if you knew they wouldn’t live that long? Would you vote for a politician who had a shorter string than the other, thinking one might die in office? Would you tell others about how much time you have left? Would a doctor not bother saving you if they knew your length? Would you be reckless knowing you are fated to live a long life?

A lot of interesting questions just from this simple premise with an ensemble of characters who grapple with these different questions as the world changes overnight. It’s a nice casual book that thankfully doesn’t explain where the boxes come from and makes you think once in awhile about how do you live life if your lifespan was presented to you. It’s fun, easy read on a rainy weekend.

Imagine if that were a reality in our world. I suppose it would have both advantages and disadvantages, don’t you think? I’ll look up that book. thanks!

    2. I tried to read this book but hated the writing style so much I DNF’d pretty fast. Such an interesting premise.
