I love stories with a cast of characters that feels alive. I also love when a character thematically means something.
Yang Wen Li is democracy manifest. Geralt is the world of monsters in a man. Aang is the last of his kind and born from equilibrium and inner peace. Tidus is the dream of a man out of time.
I don’t like stories where it feels like characters are driven by plot. I love stories where plot happens because of the intrinsic nature of the characters
I also love stories with characters that are cartoonishly bigger than life.
Any ideas?

Neil Gaiman’s *Sandman* series?
Much lighter, but the characters in *Another Fine Myth* by Robert Asprin were very memorable.
Something of a Tall Tale by Christopher C. Tyler. It’s not fantasy per se. It could be classified as “urban fantasy” or “modern folklore” I guess. But the cast is most American folklore legends/cryptids, each with a huge and distinct personality.
