I really like a book that goes into great detail about the creation and reception and meaning of a single work of art. For example, Kyle Gann’s No Such Thing as Silence about John Cage’s 4’33”, or a book my college library had about Delacroix’s The Death of Sardanapalus. I love the insight from seeing preliminary sketches, or from reading about direct influences, the historical and/or biographical context, and I also love learning how a work of art was received by audiences and critics at the time and how that reception changed as time went on. Any suggestions for this?
