I’ve recently begun reading George Orwell’s “1984” and have a few questions regarding the first chapter, specifically when the Two Minute Hate is discussed.

Firstly, does the following sentence suggest that the video featuring Goldstein, shown to the people, is not authentic but rather produced by the Party as a propaganda tool and that Winston is aware of that fact?
“Goldstein was delivering his usual venomous attack upon the doctrines of the Party – an attack so exaggerated and perverse that a child should have been able to see through it, and yet just plausible enough to fill one with an alarmed feeling that other people, less level-headed than oneself , might be taken in by it.”

Secondly, Winston employs the terms ‘despicable’ and ‘sheepish’ to characterize Goldstein, and he also labels Goldstein’s speech as ‘claptrap.’ Does this indicate Winston’s dislike for Goldstein, or is it possible that Winston simply dislikes the video because he believes the Party produced it, assuming that to be true?

I hope some of you take the time to answer my questions 🙂
