I was basically bullied out of my previous job. I’m fully aware it was because I didn’t stand up for myself. I had thought my work ethic and output would speak for itself and gain me respect, but I was wrong.

I am a mid-level project manager and have always been a great worker, receiving 5/5 ratings on every position I’ve ever held. I am realizing that I am certainly at an obstacle at this point in my life – I’m quite a people pleaser. I always try to help people out, even if they are taking advantage of me, don’t respect me, or think I’m a complete idiot and I know my help won’t change their opinion.

I don’t think I will ever be able to move on to a senior roll if I am constantly taking people’s shit and I’m not respected. Doing a good job at work only gets you so far… it gets you more work, people taking credit for your work, and a million other difficult situations that don’t have to do with the work itself.

People don’t want a guy that can do a 15-day job in 10 days, they will just either expect that from then on or they will ask why it can’t be done in 8 days… People want a guy that explains to them the same job will take 20 days, and then completes it in 15 days. That’s the guy that gets promoted and respected.

How do I become better at all of the parts of a job that don’t have to actually do with the job?
