A Roman emperor, *the* Roman emperor. The one who set the template by which others measured themselves and a frustrated academic’s midlife crisis. And yet, I do feel like there are some similarities. In a strange way, both stoner and Claudius are white collar woe books. Or rather, neither of them is about the common man of either of its respective times. Both men struggle with the sense of hollowness in their pursuit of a goal. Augustus at the end of his life and Stoner more so in the middle. If I remember correctly.
But I’m interested in hearing what y’all thought of it. What similarities or connections between such wildly different characters and novels? What other authors have big stylistic jumps between books?
