I was gifted a book by my uncle called “THINK before you speak”. Very in character move by my uncle as he is pretty interested in Freud and rhetoric. I brought it with me on a boat.
I started reading it by the chapter i thought most interesting. The idea behind the book is a mental checklist for communication. The acronym is Norwegian and means Trust, Emotions, Narratives and Creativity.
I start reading and it feels pretty self-helpy, which i dont like. The author uses a lot of examples from the pandemic and compares how the government would communicate with how individual creators would communicate. He states that the individual creators got more attention beause they were better at creating emotions and narratives and being creative. He then says that we should learn from this, and use it when conveying our message.
I didnt finish reading the book. I honestly was a little overwhelmed with thoughts. i kept thinking about politicians carefully giftwrapping their message. I thought about it all the time.
I started reading my math book and i felt as if the other book was staring at me and it was pretty intense. I was in a battle with the book. Im against littering and usually pick up plastic where i go, but i wanted to win, and took my (paper) book to the lowest deck and nudged it and watched it flap 5 meter down to the ocean surface. Happiness.
I have read some reviews of the book agreeing a little with me, and as a default I would like to stay away from the self-help genre. But ive gotten curious why i got so angry at the book and im considering buying it to read it through a couple of times and try to write some good arguments for and against it. Im also planning on reading more rhetoric.
I felt like i neede to share this. I can get pretty angry if i feel like someone is selling a concept to cheap, and a lot of self-help and popscience books brush over big complex fields and tr to give very simple answers in my opinion.
Unsure of what the etiquette for this is. “What do you think of this?” “Do you agree?” Something like that.
