Ok wow this was an incredible book and I can’t believe it was her debut. I really don’t think many authors could pull off what she did (it literally spans 7 generations, 300 years, 2 different continents) and every characters story felt meaningful in its own way. 10/10, please read, I literally learned SO much about slavery, British colonization, and African history while still reading a very emotional and moving book.
So my only question(s): I thought Willie’s story was especially devastating, but I was confused by the part when she bumps into Robert at the Jazzing and she doesn’t recognize him. I know Richard wouldn’t tell her what he was doing for work but that he was making a lot of money, but is he working at the Jazzing too? Even though he knows Willie works there cleaning? Or did he still think willie was cleaning that families house? I’m just confused what his actual job was and why it was so terrible to see each other both there. I can’t find any explanation online! Sorry if this is a dumb question!
