I’ll be going on a 13+ hour scenic train journey next week, and am trying to figure out what audiobook(s) to download that will help enhance that fall feeling. Something whimsical and/or mysterious, or with Downton Abbey vibes.
I love mysteries and anything with a troubled protagonist, and am not a huge fan of sci fi or romance (though I’m not entirely opposed to them, either).
Some of my favorite books (though they don’t all have that cozy factor that I’m looking for here) are Big Little Lies, The Woman in the Window, And Then There Were None, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, A Man Called Ove, The Language of Flowers, and The Bookshop on the Corner. I also enjoyed the first three Harry Potter books, though I got distracted and never actually finished the series.
Audiobooks are preferred so I can listen while appreciating the views, but I’d also be happy to have something to actually read later at night. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

A Study in Scarlet Women by Sherry Thomas. Great mystery, love the characters, and it’s the first in an excellent series.
Well…. I think the obvious answer here is Harry Potter 4 through 7! Not that cozy but in my opinion 4 onwards is where they start getting more adult themed. (I personally find them cozy but that’s because I’ve read them/listened to them a million and one times).
Otherwise, I recently read “remarkably bright creatures” – one of the narrators is an octopus, and it’s kind of about family dynamics. I find it cozy because of the octopus and he’s kind of troubled since he’s a captive octopus.
You’d probably like where the crawdads sing if you haven’t read that already. Murder mystery set in a swamp, and you learn a lot about swamp life from the perspective of a girl who grew up there.
The 7 1/2 deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle – a murder mystery, where the main protagonist wakes up in a different body of someone who was present at the time of the death, every morning. And had to piece together what happened from different people’s perspectives. Set in the olden days so very downton Abbey vibes!
The devil and the dark water – another book by the same author as the 7 1/2 deaths of Evelyn hardcastle – another murder mystery but this time set on an old ship.
I also enjoy books by Matt Haig – not strictly cosy but I find they have a certain whimsical quality about them. I particularly enjoyed “Humans” (sci fi – about an alien who comes to earth and has to figure out humans) and “the last family in england” (narrated by a dog) not sure if I just find them whimsy because they’re set in the U.K. (I’m English).
And of course – anything by Agatha Christie seems to fit your description!

I wouldn’t say it’s particularly cosy, but maybe a little Christie murder mystery set on a train along with your scenic train ride could elicit goosebumps?
