I always try to make sure that by the end of each year, the books I have read aren’t so heavily skewed to male authors. It’s never on purpose as I usually just go by the premise or genres of books when choosing what to read, but it invariably ends up looking that way. Any genres and suggestions welcome as I’d like to get a broad response of people’s favourites that I can add to my lists.

Carson McCullers is one of my favorites. Quite progressive for her time. I enjoyed Tess Gunty’s “The Rabbit Hutch” last year, too.
Sharon Lee for space opera.
Wen Spencer for fantasy.
The Broken Earth trilogy by N.K Jemisin
When Women were Dragons by Kelly Barnhill
White Horse by Erika Wurth
Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse
Split Tooth by Tanya Tagaq
Every Heart a Doorway by Seanen Mcguire
Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng
Delilah Green doesn’t Care by Ashley Herring Blake
And a few non-binary authors
Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi
The Terraformers by Annalee Newitz
The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey
Toni Morrison!
Contemporary suggestions :
Barbara Kingsolver (*The Poisonwood Bible* is one of the best American novel of the 20th century, imo.)
Laura Kasischke is fascinating.
Joyce Carol Oates has a very solid body of work.
What genres do you enjoy? I’ll recommend some female and non-binary writers for you.
