New to this sub. I’m talking about some feelings toward Shadow of the Wind and Hurricane Wars. It might contain spoilers.
Maybe it was me reading this after one that disappointed me
Hurricane Wars, it was nice and a bit surreal to see your culture represented in a fantasy book. Like, seeing the characters describe a chair in a throne room as something grand and I think, I see these chairs everytime in my Grandma’s house. I didn’t come in for the romance (because I hated the love interest, not toxic per se, but I can’t help but roll my eyes everytime he asserts his goals and beliefs). I came in for the political aspect because of the writer’s background, but I do feel that the way the romance was handled is bad.
I read everything. I am not picky towards genre or at least, I don’t consciously choose the genre I want to read. I read almost anything (except horror because I’m a scaredy-cat and romance because I was just not into it so much) but these days I tend to gravitate towards mysteries.
Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon isn’t exactly perfect, but the way it weaves a mystery with drama is one thing. It may not have been murder mystery, but I liked how past drama and secrets are unfolded. It got me gasping twice from some major revelations. I predicted a major twist out in random and quite surprised and satisfied with how the twist was justified. I was scared that the author would make the characters suffer more than they should but I am glad with how things turned out. Call it sappy or what, I liked it.
This was the second or the third(?) translated book that I liked after Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino
