One of the best books I read in recent years was Robert Gottlieb’s “Lives and Letters,” which is a collection of biographical essays of famous people, mostly in the form of book reviews of recently published biographies. I’m currently reading Jill Lepore’s book, “The Deadline,” which is a collection of historical essays she wrote for The New Yorker.
Aside from the fact that both of them are fantastic prose stylists, I really like the format of these books. It’s hard to commit to full scale biographies of most people, but the essay format is perfect and engaging.
Anyone know of similar collections?
