Can you legitimately say you’ve “read” a book when you’ve listen to the audiobook version? Does it truly capture the essence of reading, or is it a unique experience of its own?

I’ve had this debate with a few people and a handful of them argue that is it essentially the same thing. After all, you’re absorbing the same content.

    1. I think it depends on the person you’re talking to.

Getting the lexical content through your ears is a different experience to engaging your brain through your visuals neurology and your meaning-making brain.

So to me, it depends entirely on whether the person I’m talking to thinks “reading” means “getting the lexical content” or not.

    2. Do you know the story? If you do, then yes you “read” it through one of your senses which is by hearing.
