I love fantasy, but a lot of modern fantasy books just fall flat for me; partially because of the characters and partially because I really enjoy a lot of the classic tropes and seeing them being subverted just for the sake of it is not my thing. I don’t mind a twist on them, but often they don’t make sense to the story and it’s like subverting the trope was the “point” of writing the book, rather than it arising naturally from a solid story and character etc.

I’m rambling… to focus on things I enjoy, I love being immersed in a world, I love dragons and quests and alliances and good struggling to overcome evil. The fantasy books that I’ve enjoyed the most seem to be from the late 1970s to early 2000s, and I would love to hear of any recommendations for classic fantasy you have from that time period as I’m sure I’ve missed plenty. I don’t mind if they’re obscure or recced every day, series or standalone, basically anything!

I will say that Anne McCaffery and Robert Jordan are both already on my to read list ahaha

    Thank you!
