I just finished the book “Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea” by Barbara Demick. The book explores the lives of individuals in North Korea, providing a detailed and personal account of the challenges they conducted extensive interviews and research to present a compelling narrative that sheds light on the harsh realities of life in North Korea.
I really enjoyed the book because the reader is taken on a journey to learn about the lives of six individuals, all of whom were connected (basically an anthology). I learned a LOT about North Korea, and South Korea for that matter. It has been days since I finished the book and I’m still thinking about the six people I met through it.
I’d love to read another book with similar themes of investigative journalism, history, and anthological biography but about a different region. I’ve combed through some reddit threads with suggestions already, but wanted to try again. Does anyone have suggestions?
