The wording of the title is misleading but I don’t want stories of people shagging zombies!
I mean intimate in terms of scope; instead of focusing on a massive world, it focuses on only a few people while the world outside is largely left to the imagination.
What I’m looking for is stories, either by people here in the subreddit, or the greater web. Where the content of the story follows a small group of people (2-3 people, preferably a family) where one of the party is infected in the beginning and the story recounts the days leading up to full zombificiation.
Ideally it would detail the thoughts, decisions, and emotions, from any perspective, as they watch someone they love succumb to the infection ravaging their body and mind.
Ideally this story does not have a happy ending and potentially all characters do not survive.
Also, ideally is free/open for viewing.

I’m being so specific because I have an idea for a story that follows this same premise, but would be different in a few key areas, and could use some inspiration on how to emotionally charge the plot.
How do the characters handle the unexpected infection of a loved one?
How do the characters respond as they witness the infection first-hand, rather than only ever seeing the end result, or witnessing it occur to a stranger?
How do the characters handle coming to terms with the impending loss and ultimate demise?
Anywho thanks for reading and thanks for suggestions if you post them!

I Am Legend by Richard Matheson seems like it’s what you’re looking for. I don’t want to give anything away, but I can say that even if you saw the movie… you don’t know the story. They are virtually nothing alike, except in name.
The Forest of Hands and Teeth?
Clive Barker’s ‘Books of Blood’ is a collection I recommend for its groundbreaking range of horror stories. Barker’s imagination knows no bounds, and this compilation showcases his ability to terrify and fascinate with tales that are both visceral and evocative.
Dance of the Dead by Christie Golden.
It focuses on a crew of people on a performance boat. Basically they travel to different places and perform. Some of them start turning into zombies/disappearing but only a few people understand what’s happening. The ending definitely hurt my soul a little and was bittersweet. It’s not like zombies in the traditional sense since there are elements of fantasy involved, but it’s a fun read with a little bit of everything. Mystery, fantasy, horror, romance.
