A few weeks ago I read one of James Herriot’s “All Creatures Great and Small” books, which of course takes place in Yorkshire. I love that region of England, so not being ready to leave it completely, I decided to re-read “The Secret Garden,” which I haven’t read since my Children’s Lit course in college. There were obvious parallels in dialect, since the books are set in the same geographic region.
After that, however, I moved onto a book called “The Bell in the Lake” by Lars Mytting. This book, set in the Gulbrandsdal Valley of Norway, was originally written in Norwegian and later translated into English. I had a good chuckle when I started reading it and realized the translator had seemingly chosen a Yorkshire style of dialect for the dialogue throughout the novel. This was something I hadn’t picked up on when I first read it a few years ago, but since I had just read two novels set in Yorkshire, it was of course something that jumped out at me right away this go-round! Just a fun little coincidence and shows how you can pick up on new things every time you re-read a book 🙂
