How to Fly (in Ten Thousand East Lessons) by Barbara Kingsolver

Some Are Always Hungry by Jihyun Yun

    2. I wouldn’t suggest Plath to someone who’s depressed…good though Plath is.

I’d say any collection by Mary Oliver – she writes poetry that may have pain in it, but it’s basically uplifting – and from a female viewpoint. She takes the natural world, animals etc, as her starting point and this may be a comfort to your friend. Occasionally steers a little close to sentimentality but mostly her simple poems are very moving and beautiful.

How about A Poem for Every Feeling, edited by Ella Risbridger? It’s an anthology and, as the title suggests, covers lots of different moods and tones so she can find a poem that fits what she wants on any given day.
