Hi all! I am trying to compile a list of banned books with the intention of collecting them for my grandchildren when they are of age to read them. My fear is if I don’t grab them in a thrift store now, I may never be able to get them later. I was a voracious reader as a child and I want my grandkids to be able to read these books. I’ve started with “To Kill A Mockingbird”. Please suggest titles that are banned by some school district or library.

    1. All Boys Aren’t Blue

      The Bluest Eyes

      Gender Queer

      Mellisa (formerly published as George)

      Stamped: Racism, Antiracism and You

      How to be an Antiracist

      Beyond Magenta

      This book is Gay

If you search for LGBT books or books about racism you’ll find plenty that have been banned in the US.

This might not count as I don’t believe it was actually banned, but thought it could be worth a mention anyway – **Rage** by *Stephen King*. King chose to have the book removed from publication himself

Just making sure that you know a banned book is removed from a local (usually school) library. It is still available for sale. Depending on where you live, it might even be available in your grandchildren’s school library. My school district is currently teaching a banned book as part of its curriculum (To Kill a Mockingbird).

    4. *Fahrenheit 451*

      *Animal Farm*

      *1984*

      *The Lord of the Flies*

      *Of Mice and Men*

      *Brave New World*

There are more, but those are the ones I’ve read personally.

Edit to add *Stranger in a Strange Land*. It’s one of my favorite books, which I just looked up, and yes, it has been banned numerous times.

    5. *The Hate U Give* by Angie Thomas.

*Red, White, and Royal Blue* by Casey McQuiston

*And Tango Makes Three* by Peter Parnell. This is a picture book for young kids.

*Uncle Bobby’s Wedding* by Sarah S. Brannen and Lucia Soto. Also for younger kids.

*The Bluest Eye* by Toni Morrison

*March*: Books 1, 2 and 3 by John Lewis and Andrew Aydin.

      *Maus* by Art Spiegelman.

*The Color Purple* by Alice Walker.

    6. Hello from r/bannedbooks! 🙂 We’ve put together a giant collection of 32 classic banned books: if you care about book bans, you might find it useful. It’s got Voltaire, Mark Twain, The Scarlet Letter, and other classics that were banned at some point in the past. (And many of them are banned even now, as you can see yourself.)

You can find more information on the Banned Book Compendium over here: https://www.reddit.com/r/bannedbooks/comments/12f24xc/ive_made_a_digital_collection_of_32_classic/ Feel free to share that file far and wide: bonus points if you can share it with students, teachers, and librarians. 🙂

A book is not a crime.

    7. THE CATCHER IN THE RYE by J.D. Salinger. THE BLUEST EYE by Toni Morgan. ANIMAL FARM by George Orwell. A CLOCKWORK ORANGE by Anthony Burgess. THE COLOR PURPLE by Alice Walker. THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN by Mark Twain. OF MICE AND MEN by John Steinbeck. LOLITA by Vladimir Nabokov.
