*Theft of Fire* by Devon Eriksen. It is both an incredibly fun scifi adventure story–but it also dives into hard places psychologically, and the main protagonist has to balance his desires against the values instilled in him by his father. It was only published 3 weeks ago, so it’s very unlikely your boyfriend has read it yet!

The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells.
The Girl Who Could Move Sh*t With Her Mind, the first book of the Frost Files series by Jackson Ford.
The Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher.
Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton. Apparently this is also the first in a planned series.
