My 6yo niece is reading Little House on the Prairie with her mom. We loved these books as kids, but as adults recognize the racism they present towards Indigenous peoples. I’d love to get her a book that gives her a counter narrative to this. I know there are some fantastic books by Native writers that are from a young person’s perspective (Sherman Alexie’s The Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, for example) but whose reading level and subject matter is really too mature for where my niece is at. Could someone recommend me books that feature Native American or Indigenous narrators that are at a similar reading/maturity level to Little House? TIA!
