Love love love this book and the writing of all of the themes especially about good and evil and making choices. I’d love to read another book that is more modern (but open to classics) similar to this amazing book
You might enjoy Marilynne Robinson. Her writing is not nearly as dramatic as East of Eden (which I agree is fantastic) but is gorgeous nonetheless and has a lot of interesting depth and moral themes.

Some modern books that are character driven and feature moral choice that I really appreciated are Harlem Shuffle by Colson Whitehead, the Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen and the Heart’s Invisible Furies.
