Looking for influential works that require a critical distance from the author views. This is to help work on my literary criticism skills to evaluate a text based on its own merit, rather than the authors intentions or ideology.

Some examples would be the works of Martin Heidegger, who was a nazi and also one of the most influential philosophers of the 20th century. Or HP Lovecraft, whose works profoundly influenced horror and have since transcended the literary realm and into the larger sphere of pop culture.

    1. “Mists of Avalon” by Marion Zimmer Bradley was basically the genre-killer for Arthurian lit, and had a huge impact on the Neo pagan movement. It later came out that she was a child abuser and some elements of the book took on a darker tone.
