I just finished reading through Amy Tan’s entire bibliography, and I would like suggestions that may be similar! They don’t have to focus on the Asian American experience but rather be historical novels that aren’t romances but are written by women. I don’t care much about specific genre so if a fantasy book sneaks its way into the mix that’s totally fine!

    1. Not Asian American historical, but PoC, Paulette Jiles, Geraldine Brooks, and Sara Donati. All around Civil War or Gilded Age.

The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker is one of my favorite historical fantasies.

Celeste Ng and Angie Kim write novels about the contemporary Asian American experience.

Cathy Park Hong, Nicole Chung, Beth Nguyen, Julia Lee, Grace Talusan all have good Asian American memoirs.

Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo is great coming-of-age story about a queer Chinese American in 1950’s San Francisco.

Prairie Lotus by Linda Sue Park is a wonderful middle grade historical novel about a half-Chinese girl on the prairie.
