I have a friend who is brilliant, funny, depressed, alcoholic, grieving the loss of his mother, islolated and quite possibly dying. I want to send him a book for Christmas that will intrigue him, inspire some joy and warm his heart – but not like a hallmark movie – something smart, wry and witty with vivid characters…. Thoughts?
