Not a book but a decently long novella “Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption” by Stephen King. It part of one of his anthologies whose name escapes me at the moment.

Enchanted by Rene Denfield (fiction). The novel takes place primarily in a death row block. One of the characters, an investigator for one of the inmates, is based on the author’s personal experience as an investigator for death row inmates. Enchanted is a haunting, beautifully written story. I highly recommend it.

Not the whole book, but The Stranger by Camus.
And of course, with the same clarification, Count of Monte Cristo by Dumas.

Dry Guillotine – it’s set in French Guiana, which was a penal colony.

Green River Rising by Tim Willocks. For my money, the best prison novel of the modern age.
