Wtf is up with the Roger and Kit storyline? I’m rereading the book and I can’t stop thinking about it. They met when Roger was 19 and Kit was 6. And continue to interact throughout all of his childhood. One thing I appreciate in his work is there’s never the pretense of “it was a different time” regarding young teens and adults the way people like to pretend history was. This feels particularly egregious and it’s never discussed?? Like nobody seems to have a problem with this??
I feel like Follett really missed out on getting to explore the creation of the modern gay identity that was happening around this time. I’ve always enjoyed the snippets of what queer life was like in any given period he includes and so much could have been done with this time period! Molly houses, blackmail, etc. And he comes up with..this?
