I used to read a lot in elementary school, but COVID and the jump to high school meant I slowly lost interest. Now that I have a bit more free time, I want to get back into reading.
The problem is, I haven’t found a genre I like yet. I like Disney movies, but fantasy books are challenging to follow with all their foreign names and spells. What happened to just wishing for things? I liked short stories set in high school / college, but there aren’t too many anthologies of those and a lot of them end the same way (friends (re)unite, protagonist gains self-esteem, etc). Another problem is that I don’t like long descriptions, which is why I prefer more visual media like TV, graphic novels and manga. Outside of books, my interests are languages, history, and sports stats (random, I know).
I know my post is kind of vague, but I do have an oddly specific request. A book about a friendship that develops like a romance (single protagonist experiences a meet-cute, opens up to the stranger, and gets to know them) without actually becoming one. A platonic romance, if you will.

Skullduggery Pleasant series by Derek Landy?
Oh you should read the Serena Valentino Villains series (all about Disney’s villains) and the Twisted Tales series (multiple authors but also Disney related). Edit: both are very popular in my high school library.
If you’re open to nonfiction, you might like scorecasting.
