Just finished it and the edition I read outlines the ending Edith Wharton seems to have intended: >!Nan runs away to South Africa with her old flame, helped by her former governess who gives up her own chance at a happy ending with said flames’ father.!<
Just wondering what alternate endings would be possible? I do see Nan moving back to New York for example, setting up shop there and installing herself as an independent and slightly rebellious society lady. What’s your take?
