Just want to relate to a book, because I’m that girl lol. So I want the story to be about a “good” girl who is from a good and loving family, at least on the surface, but had to distance from them because what the family want is not what she wants. And she feels out of place and trying to find where she belongs. So I want it to be filled with emotional battles and maybe heart-wrenching family drama. Filled with (or just a sprinkle) of romance. Like a coming of age story? But where the character was older than 20, trying to find her purpose and people that truly love her for who she was. Anyone knows something like that?

The latest book I really like is “Bayan Moon” by Thao Thai. It focuses on inter-generational trauma and the tumultuous relationship between daughter-mother. I also like “Freckles” by Cecelia Ahern. It’s about a woman who was socially awkward and tried to settle with the realization that everything she needed was already on its place. A bit boring at times, but I like the melancholy feeling of the book. So yes, I like melancholic, emotional, and relatable books hehe. Oh, and a book with audiobook format available is preferred. Thanks!

Of the books I’ve read, I am glad my mom died by Jennette McKurdy seems close fit. Interesting read thou.

    2. Marriage of a Thousand Lies by SJ Sindhu. She married her gay best friend so they could both satisfy their families’ expectations, but of course that arrangement comes with its own complications as time passes. Then her high school girlfriend gets engaged and they realize their feelings are still there. The main character is also lying to her family about her job after being laid off. The audiobook is good, and I wouldn’t classify it as a feel good read. It’s more realistic in exploring how hard it is when people have to choose between romantic love and familial love and community.

[**The Bear and The Nightingale** by Katherine Arden](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25489134) is exactly about this. it also happens to be in my top 5 books of all time. it’s one of the most atmospheric books i’ve EVER read. i first read it in the middle of summer but *literally* felt cold while reading it.

this book is so beautiful and haunting and melancholic and fantastical. i can’t recommend it enough!

it’s book #1 in **The Winternight Trilogy**

    4. I just finished Above The Universe Below by Elias Barton and, while not a book ABOUT the girl, she (and her post good girl / family pleaser transformation) is prominently featured in the last third of the book.

I enjoyed the book as a whole and liked watching the transformations of the characters throughout. My only real complaint is that the author doesn’t really indicate how much time passes throughout the story so sometimes the transformations feel rushed because it’s not immediately apparent that weeks or months have passed.

    5. Have you read the memoir Educated, by Tara Westover?

It’s not quite what you’ve described here, except that it’s about the author’s experience growing up in a *really* wild survivalist Mormon family environment in the mountains of Idaho, and ultimately breaking from them against their wishes to go off to college and get an education. So we have the leave family expectations element for sure.

Good and loving family? Ehhhhh….in their own ways.

      Romance? Not really.

Really fascinating read, though! And this family honestly makes most families look pretty tame and normal. 😂
