I just watched The Killer with Michael Fassbender and loved it.
Are there any books similar where it’s based on meticulous protagonists and focuses more on the planning and slow burn of the story?
Most books lead into massive silly action but I much prefer characters that outsmart the bad guys.
I’ve read the Victor the assassin series and it was perfect but nothing else seems to be similar.

Day Of The Jackal by Forsyth
Maybe not super modern (1960s setting) but I think this is exactly what you are looking for. I love this book and I have not come across too many others that are as good.
The John Rain series by Barry Eisler. Good tradecraft. Unfortunately the author is a pretentious douche in real life but I enjoyed the books for what they were
