I’m in desperate need of some suggestions for what to read on my upcoming trip. Thought I had a comprehensive packing list, but I forgot about packing my kindle with great books, whoops! I always love a gripping read while traveling, especially psychological suspense or horror—anything that can make me forget I’m packed like a sardine with a bunch of strangers.

I’d particularly like books that have an especially autumnal feel, and bonus points if they’re set in the UK (a good haunted house story would be brilliant). I’m open to any genre, but my usual favorites are fantasy, horror, mystery, and historical fiction that isn’t too dense. Some dark academia books I’ve read recently were wonderful (Hell Bent, I’m looking at you), and I’d love some suggestions in that direction if you have them.

Thanks in advance for the recs!

What Moves the Dead, a retelling of Fall of the House of Usher set in the UK with a cameo of a famous mycologist.

    2. Haven’t read too many scary books but one of my faves is The Last House On Needless Street

If you liked Hellbent, you might want to check out the following:

The Dark Vault, V.E. Schwab – she’s a favorite author. The story follows an urban fantasy, with a high school girl dealing with grief, her family, a double life, and a job to help the dead, that could be fatal for her.

A deadly education – think, Hogwarts. But it’s constantly trying to kill all its students. To graduate, you first have to live.

The Haunting of Hill House – this is a pretty popular book

    4. You’d probably enjoy The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle.

Also try The Rivers of London series.

The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters.

Rebecca, obviously, if you’ve never read it.

      Jonathan Strange & Mr Norell

**A Night in the Lonesome October** by Roger Zelazny is wonderful and extremely autumnal.

If you haven’t read it already, **The Haunting of Hill House** by Shirley Jackson is phenomenal. I especially recommend the audiobook narrated by David Warner.

Cosigning the rec for **Rebecca** as well.

Edit: Just thought of one more – **The Girl With All the Gifts** by M.R. Carey. Extremely fun and creepy and takes place in the UK.
