Very timely considering what happened here in Dublin on Thursday. I loved this book. It shows the horrors endured by average people when a government opposes them. It highlights what a difficult decision it is for people to emigrate from their homeland even during times of crises. It smartly transports the horrors of Syria, Palestine et all into a white middle class society to drive home its point to people, like me, who haven’t endured hardship. It’s also just a wonderful piece of prose. I’m very happy for Paul Lynch, well deserved.

It’s the only shortlisted book I’ve read so lucky me. I liked it but didn’t love it. Amazing prose style but I don’t see it measuring up to other famous dystopian books in the long run since it doesn’t bring anything new to the table plot-wise.
