Help me find a UK library book title

I can’t remember the title of a book I read as a kid 30 years ago. It’s been really bugging me. Some things I remember are:

– it was in the school library, possibly UK scholastics?
– set in the 1980’s/1990’s in the UK
– main character was called Terry, nickname ‘Tel’
– I remember something about bonfire night and a ‘penny for the guy’ plotline

That’s all I remember sadly, can anyone help?

This is purely out of nostalgia, but I would dearly love to find this book again. It was good as I recall!
