I teach literature to high school students in China, and am looking for texts which are interesting and have literary merit, whilst being linguistically simple enough for my students to understand (and with content that won’t get me into trouble).

I’d normally suggest Animal Farm but yes that might get you in trouble! Never Let Me Go however also appears on GCSE lists in the UK and has lots to talk about, more human than political.
*The Road* is incredibly simple–but maybe not high school appropriate.
Watership Down? Originally written for children, but it’s now a classic and many adults read it.
Would…To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee …be trouble?
…maybe…The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
…a good one for “younger readers”
Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson
Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
It has interesting themes and the writing style is simple.
