Please hear me out on this one, because I’m not looking for books that fall back on queer coded villains or characters whose questionable behavior is centered around being queer. Rather I’m looking for LGBTQIA books where its characters express the full range of human behavior and emotion, even negative ones, something akin to a queer My Year of Rest and Relaxation or Wuthering Heights.
I understand there is a need to fight back against queer characters being villains or villains being coded queer. But being trans and spending much of my time in queer circles, both some of the best and worst people I know happen to be queer. Both my partner and my abuser are trans. I would enjoy books that acknowledge the reality that if everyone you know is gay, then eventually there will be gay individuals who are problematic if not downright terrible.
