I read After Dark by Haruki Murakami several months ago, and I haven’t read anything like it since. I’m only sixteen so I know I haven’t delved into a bunch of great literature yet. What really sticks out to me is that this book didn’t need it’s plot to sway me, but rather the writing had me in a trance. I picked up the book because I saw Murakami’s other book Norwegian Wood in a book review and they didn’t have it when I went to the bookstore so I bought this one instead. I want to read something that will capture me like After Dark did.

If you want to say “Why not just read Norwegian Wood?” then maybe except I didn’t like the plot (according to the summary). I don’t think I would fancy After Dark’s either though by the summary. Is it still worth it to read it because I’ll like the writing? I’ve heard it’s similar to Spring Snow by Yukio Mishima, but I didn’t like that one.

I’m 16 and a girl, btw lol idk if this is relevant but I heard it’s useful information for media recommendations ToT.

    1. Norwegian Wood is ok. I like Murakami’s weirder surreal stuff more. Kafka on the Shore and Windup Bird Chronicle are both very good. You might like Kafka more at 16 the protagonist is your age and it’s a coming of age story so if that interests you definitely check it out. Norwegian Wood is a coming of age story as well but it’s more straightforward and grounded in reality whereas Kafka is magical surrealism.
