Been browsing the web, kindle, libraries and goodreads and nothing worth reading and remembered there is reddit. So I primarily read fantasy books. I read The Wheel of Time, Legend of the Arch Magus, Cradle, A Deadly Education, Bastard by Alexey Osadchuk, The Poppy War, Shadow and Bone. Also progression fantasy and SCI-FI is welcomed

The Death Gate Cycle by Weis & Hickman
The Dresden Files sounds like exactly what you’re looking for
Dresden Files, Alex Verus (a very unique style of magic in this case)
Shadow slave, its a web novel, it takes time to pick up pace just in the beginning other than that its all good. Also its young adult.
Just two books in it so far (but both are long!) but Samantha Shannon’s Roots of Chaos series fits the bill. _A Day of Fallen Night_ and _The Priory of the Orange Tree_.
Raymond E. Feist has a series that starts with Magician: Apprentice, which is great. The first book has two friends, one of which is a prodigy in magic, the other in fighting.
Saga of the Forgotten Warrior, Corriea
Stormlight Archive, Sanderson
Elenium/ Tamuli, Eddings
The First Law books by Abercrombie are a bit lighter on the magic, and heavier on the fighting…
The Traveler’s Gate Trilogy by Will Wight. Magic is used by calling energy and creatures from other worlds called territories. People who can draw from their territories are called travelers. The first book in the series is House of Blades.
I love A Darker Shade of Magic trilogy by V.E. Schwab. She just released the first book in a spinoff series too, takes place about 7 years after the trilogy ends (if I remember correctly). I loved it also.
